Cadets Take 4th Consecutive Title Burton Uxbridge’s top Cadet Team set their junior counterparts a tough target by taking their 4th consecutive National Cadet League title in the event run at Robert Sutton Sports College. With several players moving upwards into the much higher standard Junior British League Competition the team had a very different look from that of the first 3 day with Jessica Birbeck moving up to play at number & Joe Byrne moving up from the 2nd team. This was added to by debuts for 12 year old Adil Rashid & 13 year old Jamie Davies. Starting the day with a 12 point lead the new look side started off with a draw against Colin Deaton TTC from Stavely with Jess, Adil & Joe all taking 1 each. Their nearest rivals, Speedwell TTC were next on the table and although many games were tight it was Speedwell who took the important points and a 5-1 win, with Adil taking Burton Uxbridge’s only point. Things were not much better against Bromsgrove as again the new side found things tough. However their never say die attitude resulted in Jess & Adil taking the last 2 games to rescue some pride, if not a win. This left just one game to play against a strong Birmingham side, their 12 point lead whittled away to just 5 and Speedwell playing Colin Deaton on the next table. Jess was first up against Birmingham number 1 Mitchell Nash and after taking the first she went 2-1 down only to battle back to take the 4th. On the table next-door, Colin Deaton’s Ronan Kelly completed a very welcome victory leaving Jess one end from the title. Not one to do things the easy way, the 5th end tooed & froed to 10-10 before 2 forehand winners took Jess to 12 and the victory the team needed to secure the title. Team & Competition Organiser Simon Price said afterwards "To have 4 consecutive titles is a huge achievement and a great advert to the coaching ethos throughout the club. What makes this year’s success even more special is that players have had to come in to replace those who have improved so much in a season they have been involved in competition at higher levels and those who have come in have still performed. The strength in depth we are now producing is incredibly pleasing and these titles are proving just a stepping stone to bigger and better things. A 5th title however maybe the hardest yet with indications that entries may double next year after so many positive comments from the teams playing this year, the first played at Robert Sutton Sports College" Full results can be found on our website at www.uxbridgettc.co.uk

Cadets Continue On Course For Title Defence Burton Uxbridge’s top Cadet Team put themselves in pole position to take their 4th consecutive National Cadet League title as they again remained unbeaten on the 3rd day of games. With the competition, held at Robert Sutton Sports College, now in split into 2 divisions of 6, the team of Alistair Hawthorn, Przemek Bednarcyzk and Jessica Birbeck beat teams from Birmingham, Stavely & Bromsgrove, dropping only two games in the process. Przemek has now won all 32 games he has played in the competition this year, his first year representing Burton Uxbridge. Speedwell TTC from Stavely currently lie second after winning 3 out 5 games ahead of the 2 Birmingham sides. In the Division 2 no one could get past the experienced team from Lichfield, now in their 4th year in the competition. They won all 5 of their matches but lie only 5 points clear of Burton Uxbridge’s 2nd team of Joe Byrne, Dan Morson & Holly Wright. Joe & Dan won 9 of their 10 games being beaten only by Lichfield’s Cameron Sykes who remained the only player in the division not to lose. There were also good wins for Emma Shand & Paul Lilley for the 3rd team and Will Pearson came away winning 4 from 8 games for the William Shrewsbury side. With the average age of players in the 2nd division being only 12 the future of the event looks healthy with plans to expand the team base next year up to 24 teams. This would see an event with 72 youngsters playing in one hall, a possibility the club is excited about. Club Development Officer and Cadet League Organiser Simon Price said "With our schools coaching program now extending to cover new schools such as Tower View & Winshill Primary we would hope to get many more schools involved as William Shrewsbury have, as well as involve clubs from the Derby & Leicester area. The National Cadet League is an ideal platform to introduce youngsters to a National level competition on their doorstep giving them a taste of what they may expect if wishing to take further steps in the sport".
