July 26th 2010 Andrew Heathcote and Liam Burt

ALFABET TAKE FIRST TITLE HONOURS
Just two games were played to complete Division 2 of the Chartwell Burton Uxbridge Summer Table Tennis League but both had a major bearing on the top four places. Alfabet had started as favourites, having their destiny in their own hands, as they took on 2nd place Pears. Andrew Heathcote made a good start beating Mark Pearson in straight sets but Will Pearson was to prove a much steeper hurdle. He took a 2-1 lead against Liam Burt and had game points a plenty in the 4th before losing 18-16. Buoyed by this, Liam held the upper hand throughout the 5th end and eventually triumphed 11-8 to put his side 2-0 up. Roles were reversed in the next match as it was Alfabet’s Andrew who took a 2-1 lead against Will. This left just 1 end to win for victory and the league title, but Will wasn’t ready to give it all up yet and promptly came back to win the last two to put a game on the board for Pears. This left Mark to play Liam with again a win needed to keep Alfabet hanging on. Here, despite there never being more than 3 points in it at any stage, it was Liam who took the important points to come away with all 3 ends and finally a league title for Alfabet. Not to be complacent, Alfabet then added the doubles for a 4-1 win. This left Pears having to beat Platinum Players to take 2nd place but in this one it was Romas Goncarov & Michael Seymour who romped away with a straight sets, 5-0 success!! This lifted the latter into 2nd place and even saw Pears fall away to finish 4th as some good end of season form from Iron Weasel saw them squeeze into 3rd place. Red Devils’ Mark Jones ended the season on top of the averages, only losing 2 games but mentions must go to Romas Goncarov who in his first league campaign finished equal 2nd, losing only 3 games, and Lewis Acton & Ellie Rutland-Jones who both improved impressively over the summer. FURY FINISH IN STYLE
Balls of Fury completed their first season in the Chartwell Burton Uxbridge Table Tennis League with a terrific victory over the Winter League champions. Only Wanderers Andy Walker’s fighting 5 set win against Stephen Ward, stopped the youngsters from completing a whitewash, as Jamie Davies won both his games plus the doubles with Stephen, for a 4-1 success. They followed this with a more comfortable 5-0 win over Inbetweeners, leaving Jamie & Stephen 4th & 6th in the season averages respectively. Destroyers kept their title hopes alive, piling on a little more last night misery for Inbetweeners, with another 5-0 scoreline. Dave Thulborn & James Ward completed the evening unbeaten. Bouilloires had their full team out completing 2 games with varying success. Graham & Jan Kettle took on the harder task against Wanderers, with Jan very unlucky not to get anything out of Andy Walker, losing in 5. Graham, not to be outdone, pushed Brian Beer all the way to a 5th end and after match points went by for both players, he finally secured a 15-13 success. But with Wanderers winning all the other games the match ended 4-1. Glen Carr took both his singles in Bouilloires other game against P&P but it was Bekki Lycett who provided the bigger talking points. First she blew a 2-0 lead to go down in 5 against Romas Goncarov, playing his first game in Division 1. She then went 2-0 down against Simon Price before some intelligent placement and great attacking play brought her back level. In the final end it was Simon who got the upper hand and looked to have found his form again at 10-7 but Bekki wasn’t to be denied and after saving 5 match points she final nailed a forehand winner to win 15-13. The doubles went the way of P&P but it was Bouilloires who took the match 3-2. P&P also had two games and were successful in their 2nd, beating Dynamic Duo 4-1. Joe Byrne beat granddad Pat Byrne for DD’s only point as Simon Price remained unbeaten in this game. Finally Topspinners’ Matthew Hartland completed a good 5 end win over Toxic Monkeys’ Laura Shand but was his team’s only winner as Sarah Howells remained unbeaten, with the Monkeys winning 4-1. The summer break will now come into play with the remaining matches being completed in September. Alfabet but themselves in prime position to take Division 2 as they beat Hit & Miss 4-1. Bekki Lycett started things off well for H&M as she became only the second player of the season to topple Andrew Heathcote but that was where her team’s success stopped as Liam Burt completed a maximum and Alfabet a 4-1 win. Red Devils completed their fixtures with a brace of 3-2 wins. Mark Jones went to the top the averages winning all 4 of his games but both Woteva & Terrible Twins took the other singles to leave the matches hinging on the doubles. But as on two other occasions over the summer son Alex joined Mark to come through to make it 4 team wins. Terrible Twins then repeated the feat against Derbyshire Dragons as Dragon Paul Dolman took 2 then doubles with son Pete to squeeze home 3-2. PEARS DOUBLE TIGHTENS TOP SPOTS
Two wins from Pears saw them move to within a point of leaders Alfabet in Division of the Chartwell Burton Uxbridge Summer Table Tennis League. Mark Pearson proved that “getting the ball on the table” really does work as he won all his 4 games, coming from behind to win them all. Will Pearson also took 2 as they beat Derbyshire Dragons 5-0, but couldn’t hang on to a 2-0 lead against Hit & Miss’ Bekki Lycett as she stole a point. That meant Alfabet’s 5-0 win over Terrible Twins maintained their top spot. Iron Weasel’s much improved form went from good to even better this week as they took out Woteva 5-0. Lewis Acton moved past the 50% in the averages with 2 here, ably supported by Gary Carr. Platinum Players were pushed very close by Red Devils as Mark Jones won both his singles. However, Michael Seymour & Romas Goncarov held things together to take the remaining games for a 3-2 win, and just hang onto 3rd place. Mark also took 2 in the devil’s 2nd match against Dominators. Here Nick Purslow & Liam Blower both took 1 each for Dominators but were edged out in the doubles giving Red Devils a 3-2 success. Balls of Fury scored a terrific 3-2 victory against Destroyers with Jamie Davies & Stephen Ward both taking 1 plus the doubles. Individual honours though went to a James ward straight sets brace. George Falcus also continue his top summer with another 2 for Inbetweeners, in their 4-1 win against Toxic Monkeys. Matt Hemstock weighed in with 1 before joining George to take the doubles. Steve McGloughlin took the Monkeys only score. Dynamic Duo’s Joe Byrne was in great form with 2 good wins against Bouilloires Glen Carr & Bekki Lycett. However the French kettles took the other singles games and the doubles for a 3-2 win. Finally, Topspinner Laura Hartland secured her first win of the summer beating P&P’s Simon Price in 4 and brother Matt was desperately unlucky not to repeat the same after coming down from 2-0 to level his game before being beaten 11-8 in the 5th. This was unfortunately their only success as Pat Byrne remained unbeaten for P&P to win 4-1. For more information on all Table Tennis news go to www.uxbridgettc.co.uk

A&E MAINTAIN PERFECT RECORD
A&E maintained their perfect record of 7 straight 5-0 victories in the Chartwell Burton Uxbridge Summer Table Tennis League this week making short work of P&P. Abbie Milwain completed her maximum without dropping a set & Eddie Freeman just lost the one. Destroyers kept in touch with a similarly impressive performance against Bouilloires. James Ward & Dave Thulborn completed a 5-0 win without losing a set. Toxic Monkeys & Dynamic Duo were determined to share the spoils around as they all beat each other!! Laura Shand took her first summer game beating Joe Byrne before Joe scored a great win against Steve McGloughlin. Steve then took his point, beating Sam Mastropietro leaving Sam to beat Laura complete the circle!! This left the match in the hands of the doubles and it was the doubles DD’s who came through for a 3-2 success. Dynamic Duo were also involved in a 2nd game, however this was slightly more one way traffic as 2nd placed Balls of Fury came home 5-0 winners with Jamie & Stephen Ward unbeaten. Finally in Division 1, Topspinner Matt Hartland had a great win over Inbetweeners’ Matt Hemstock, coming from 2-0 down, to just creep over the line 16-14 in the 5th. However this was his team’s only point, as George Falcus took 2 and team mate Matt 1 plus the doubles for Inbetweeners to win 4-1. Attention was on the top end of Division 2 as Iron Weasel continued their march up the league beating 2nd placed Platinum Players 3-2. A good all round team performance saw them home as Lewis Acton & Gary Carr took 1 each before securing the doubles (all 3 games in 5 sets!!). Romas Goncarov remained unbeaten on the other side. Ellie Rutland-Jones continued her recent good form with an impressive win over Mark Pearson. Despite this Terrible Twins couldn’t register any further success as Will Pearson saw his Pears side to victory 4-1. Better was to come for Pears as they secured a 5-0 win against Woteva with the Pearson’s this time both unbeaten. Woteva fared a little better against Hit & Miss with Edward Worth scoring a fine win over Chris Lycett and only losing to Bekki Lycett in 5. But Hit & Miss took all the others games for a 4-1 match result. In the last match, Derbyshire Dragons’ Peter Dolman secured his first league win as he took 3 deuce games’ to beat Dominators’ Nick Purslow. Dad Paul also took 2 as the Dragons took 4 points before Liam Blower gave Dominators some respectability with a victory in the last game. TOP CLASS INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE
Division 2 continued to spring some surprise results in the Chartwell Burton Uxbridge Summer Table Tennis League, with two players at the top of the averages both beaten. After losing her 100% record only last week Bekki Lycett suffered a hangover when she was beaten in fantastic style by 11 year old Ellie Rutland-Jones, 3-0! Despite this being her teams only win on the night it backed up recent comments from coaches Chris Newton & Helen Lower that something has started to click with Ellie. In the match Hit & Miss ran out 4-1 winners as Chris Lycett took a maximum. The shocks continued in Iron Weasel’s game with Red Devils where Mark Jones, who is already the only person to beat 3 of the league’s top players, was shot down himself, this time in 5, by the left hand of Gary Carr. Gary then had to pull out all the stops to stop himself being the “shock” victim as young Alex Jones pushed him all the way, only to lose in 5. Inspired by his partner’s antics, Lewis Acton also took 1 and the doubles with Gary for a 4-1 team Weasel win. Alfabet extended their lead at the top with a comfatable 5-0 win over bottom side Dominators with Andrew Heathcote & Liam Burt unbeaten and Platinum Players kept on their heels with a 4-1 success over Derbyshire Dragons. Romas Goncarov continued his impressive first season taking 2 and was backed up with 1 plus the doubles from Michael Seymour. The Dragons point came from a good win from Paul Dolman. In Division 1 Destroyers continued their unbeaten season with a 5-0 win over Topspinners whilst A&E stretched their lead with a similar scoreline against Bouilloires. Respectively, Dave Thulborn & James Ward and Abbie Milwain & Eddie Freeman were unbeaten. For more information on all Table Tennis news go to www.uxbridgettc.co.uk

WEASEL WEEDLES OUT TOP WIN
Best result by far in week 5 of the Chartwell Burton Uxbridge Summer Table Tennis League was in a losing cause. In Division 2, 9 year old Iron Weasel, Lewis Acton beat Alfabet’s Liam Burt in straight sets, a feat even left handed partner Gary Carr couldn’t match!! This was after pushing Andrew Heathcote to 5 sets in his first game of the night too. Although this was his team’s only point as Alfabet ran out 4-1 winners, it definitely serves as a marker for the future and with Lewis still competing at Under 11 level next season there could be a fair expectation of a trophy cabinet needed for his birthday in August!! Platinum Players continued their impressive form as they brushed aside Woteva 5-0, Romas Goncarov & Michael Seymour both unbeaten. Hit & Miss matched the Players performance with a 5-0 victory of their own, over Dominators. Bekki Lycett maintained her 100% record and despite a scare from Nick Purslow, brother Chris also took a maximum. Sparkies opened their “win” account with a 5-0 win over Derbyshire Dragons. Paul Dolman took his first maximum, including a success over son Pete, and was helped out by 2 from a left handed Simon Price. The Sharks team has been withdrawn from the league and all their results have been expunged. In Division 1, Balls of Fury maintained their grip on the top, with a comftable 5-0 win against P&P. Jamie Davies & Stephen Ward both kept up their own personal 100% records but feature of the match were some outrageous edges from both teams as scrambled balls came back from all places and then shot of in another unexpected direction!! However thought was this didn’t really change the result much!!! Reigning champions A&E made up some ground as they took all 10 points on offer. Firstly they saw off Toxic Monkeys for whom Sarah Howells took the only end. They then put previously unbeaten Inbetweeners to the sword, this time George Falcus the only blip in Eddie Freeman’s & Abbie Milwain progress. Dynamic Duo’s Joe Byrne matched Lewis Acton’s division 2 feats, with a tremendous 5 set win over Wanderers’ Gary Carr. But again this was DD’s only point as Brian Beer took both his games plus the doubles with Gary for a 4-1 victory. Finally Glen Carr & Graham Kettle were both unstoppable as Bouilloires secured a 5-0 success over Topspinners. For more information on all Table Tennis news go to www.uxbridgettc.co.uk

BALLS OF FURY STRETCH LEAD
Balls of Fury have maintained their 100% record in Division 1 of the Chartwell Burton Uxbridge Summer Table Tennis League, after their third 5-0 victory in a row. Jamie Davies & Stephen Ward were in great form as they refused to allow Bouilloires even an end, with only the final doubles game going to deuce. George Falcus continued his unbeaten start leading Inbetweeners to a 3-2 win against Wanderers. He just edged out Gary Carr in the 5th before taking his 6th win of the season, beating Michael Seymour. Matt Hemstock added a third point for Inbetweeners before Gary took the last singles and then the doubles with Michael for Wanderers. Many thanks to Michael for stepping in with literally 5 minutes notice for Wanderers. Toxic Monkeys scored their biggest win for a few years, coming away with all the points in a 5-0 success over P&P. Steve McGloughlin & Sarah Howells were both unbeaten. Dynamic Duo also took their first win of the summer with a 4-1 win against Topspinners. Joe Byrne took 2 & Sam Mastropietro 1 for the double D’s but were denied a full house by Matthew Hartland’s excellent win over Sam. Two unbeaten sides clashed in Division 2 as Platinum Players maintained their winning run. 1 each from Mike Seymour & Romas Goncarov plus the doubles saw them beat Hit & Miss, but neither could find a way past Bekki Lycett, who now remains the only unbeaten player in the division. Alfabet moved to the top with a 5-0 win against Sparkies. Andrew Heathcote & Liam Burt scored 2 each but were both pushed by rapidly improving Paul Dolman who now looks forward to locking horns with son Peter in his next game. Woteva moved up to 3rd place after beating Sharks 5-0. Edward Worth took his third consecutive maximum, ably supported by a left-handed Simon Price. The double left-handed combination of Lewis Acton & Gary Carr put up a great fight for Iron Weasel against Pears. Both were involved in 5 set thrillers with Mark Pearson but unfortunately both ended on the wrong side and a win for Will Pearson over Lewis gave Pears a 3-2 victory. Finally Red Devils had a good win, taking out Derbyshire Dragons 4-1. Mark Jones came away with 2 and son Alex 1, leaving Gary Acton to take the dragons point. Platinum Players Third Perfect Game
Platinum Players have bolted out the blocks in Division 2 of the Chartwell Burton Uxbridge Summer Table Tennis League, taking their first 3 matches 5-0. Regular Michael Seymour has teamed up with first season player, 13 year old Romas Goncarov and together they have remained unbeaten. This week it was Terrible Twins fell victim to the Players as only Morgan Sykes could manage an end. Hard on their heels are Alfabet who also took their third win of the season. However, Andrew Heathcote & Liam Burt both had to give way to Red Devils’ Mark Jones as he took 2, including a 12-10 5th end win over Andrew, as the winter league runners-up scrambled over the line, 3-2 winners. Mark & Will Pearson made short work of Sparkies as Pears scored a 5-0 success. Bekki Lycett was in top form for Hit & Miss as she saw her side to a 3-2 win against Iron Weasel. Her 2 plus the doubles were enough as Gary Carr & Lewis Acton took 1 each for the Weasel’s. Maiden league wins for Nick Purslow & Liam Blower plus the doubles were enough to give Dominators their first win of the summer as they beat Sharks 3-2. Claire Sykes took the Sharks 2 points but Jack Prescott was very unlucky not to get a point on the board as he lost all his games, including the doubles, in 5. Woteva won for the 2nd successive week as they beat Derbyshire Dragons 3-2. Edward Worth was unbeaten for Woteva, while Harry Allsop took his first league win for the Dragons.
The Kettle family made up 75% of the first Division 1 match as daughter Sarah took on mum & dad Jan & Graham in Toxic Monkeys clash with Bouilloires. The result hinged on dad versus daughter as Graham & Sarah shared the first 4 ends before both had points to win it. Eventually it was Graham who took his chance to win 14-12 and see his team to a 3-2 victory despite a battling 5 end win for the Monkey’s in the doubles. Balls of Fury pair of Jamie Davies & Stephen Ward, are setting the early pace, completing their second 5-0 win without losing an end against Topspinners. They are being matched point for point by A&E who had a good 5-0 win over Wanderers. A third 5-0 scoreline was recorded as Destroyers beat Dynamic Duo. Finally George Falcus produced a mature performance to win both his games and take Inbetweeners to a 4-1 win against P&P. Matt Hemstock also took one leaving Simon Price to register P&P’s only point. Little Fish Baptised In Big Pond
It was a baptism of fire for some of the up & coming juniors at Burton Uxbridge Table Tennis club in the first week’s matches of Division 1 of the Chartwell Burton Uxbridge Summer Table Tennis League. The Dynamic Duo of Joe Byrne & Sam Mastropietro, making the step up to the top division for the first time, came up against reigning champions A&E in no mood for favours as Abbie Milwain & Eddie Freeman whitewashed their opponents 5-0. P&P were also put to the ultimate test, this time against winter league champions, Wanderers. Despite some good rallies Bekki Lycett & Philippa Luxton fared no better than their Dynamic counterparts as they too lost all in a 5-0 defeat, with Gary Carr & Brian Beer remaining unbeaten. Balls of Fury duo of Jamie Davies & Stephen Ward fared much better on their team’s debut as they swept aside Toxic Monkeys 5-0. This game though did see the welcome return of Aussie traveller, Sarah Howells, who unfortunately for her, managed to dodge the ash cloud, to come home from down under the week before, having been away for a year. Even better news was that she brought a pair of sparkling Kettle’s with her, in the shape of mum and dad Jan & Graham, who have formed the Bouilloire’s (free Fredo for the first non family member to tell me where the name comes from!!). They began their campaign against the Inbetweeners. George Falcus came away with 2 for his side, but with Jan & Graham both beating Matt Hemstock it came down to the doubles where Graham just "ran out of steam!" as Matt & George sneaked a 3-2 win.
It very much looked like the top half were drawn against the bottom half of Division 2 as 5 matches produced a 5-0 scoreline. Best of these looked like Woteva’s performance against Dominators. The pair of Edward Worth & Ryan Sharp showed some fine touches as they came back from losing 5-0 in week 1, winning the vital points to come away with maximum points. Iron Weasel also put on a good show as they beat terrible Twins. The team of Gary Carr & Lewis Acton, who played as Metalheads in the winter league, showed they could very well be contenders for the summer crown, completing their success without losing an end. They will surely be pressed by 3 other 5-0 victors though in the shape of Hit & Miss, Platinum Players & Alfabet who overcame Sparkies, Sharks & Derbyshire Dragons, respectively. The final match saw dad’s putting sons to sleep as Pears beat Red Devils 4-1. Will Pearson came away with 2 but dad Mark could only manage one as he was edged out in a 5 day (well it seemed that long!!) oppss sorry .. 5 set thriller by Mark Jones. Twins Unplus Sparkies On Opening Day
The opening day of the 6th Chartwell Burton Uxbridge Summer Table Tennis league saw a curtailed programme begin with 5 new teams playing for the first time. In Division 2, the Terrible Twins started things off with a bang by unplugging Sparkies 3-2!! The team, so called as both girls were born on exactly the same day but only met this season, of Morgan Sykes & Ellie Rutland-Jones belied there young years by beating their more senior opponents. Morgan took both her singles games, the 2nd coming back from 2-1 down to defeat Paul Dolman. Paul had earlier defeated Ellie in the first game but she came back well to win 3-1 against Matt Hull. The doubles saw Sparkies go 2 ends up only for the twins to battle back to 2-2. With the last end going point for point it looked like the night would never end, but somehow Matt & Paul managed to squeeze the last two points for a 12-10 success, making the final scoreline more respectable. Last season’s 3rd placed tam, Alfabet, were in no mood to give new boys Woteva, Ryan Sharp & Edward Worth, an easy ride as they stormed to straight sets whitewash. Andy Heathcote allowed his opponents no more than 6 points in any end but Edward, playing his very first league match, did well to take Liam Burt to deuce in one end. Platinum Players, a brand new formation of Michael Seymour & Romas Goncarov were in similar scrougelike mood against Dominators Liam Blower & Nick Purslow. Liam did well to take 8 points from Michael in their 2nd end but that was the sum of Dominators success as the Players ran out 5-0 winners. Sam Shines For Shinobi
An outstanding performance from Team Shinobi’s Sam Mastropietro wasn’t quite enough to push his side onto victory this week in Division 1 of the Chartwell Burton Uxbridge Winter Table Tennis League. Up against Alfabet, he had excellent wins over Andrew Heathcote & Liam Burt but was Shinobi’s only point scorer as his opponents mopped up the other games for a 3-2 success. Chris McGloughlin was also in fine form for Mean Machines as he won all 4 games he played. He started by taking two off of league leaders Dynamo and continued well to secure 2 against D&D. However, as Sam before, he couldn’t prevent his side going down 3-2 twice, with Brian Judd & Howard Webster for Dynamo and Bekki & Chris Lycett for D&D all taking one each plus the doubles. Metalheads were also in action twice and began by recording only their 2nd win. One apiece from Lewis Acton & Gary Carr was cancelled out by 2 from Pears’ Will Pearson before an 11-9 deciding end win in the doubles saw them home. Their second match brought one of the more curious games of the evening when they took on Tigers. The match started with a tight family affair, as Lewis just got the better of cousin Ellie Rutland Jones to put Metalheads 1 up before the fun started. Gary, playing left handed in Division 1, went 2-0 up against top of the averages Simon Price, who had previously lost only 1 game. Normality looked to have been restored as Simon reeled off the next 2 games only for Gary to once again bamboozle him again going 9-6 up in the 5th. But just to add to add to the unpredictability of this game, Simon then took the next 5 points for what in the end turned out being an unlikely win. With the next 2 games shared again the doubles was the deciding factor and despite it being anything but clear cut, Tigers came through 3-0 to take the match 3-2. A half hour tussle between Michael Seymour and Harry Loftus began Tripods match with Saints. The game ebbed and flowed with some terrific attacking play countered with some fantastic, if not desperate, defending, before Harry edged it 11-7 in the 5th. So as not to spoil the evening, this game too went to a doubles decider, with Harry’s 2 being equalled by one from Michael & Tony Willday. The doubles ended the match as the singles had begun with both sides in control at times, but it was Saints who managed to come good at the right time, squeezing home 11-8. The division’s final game saw Rams make ground in 2nd place as they beat Waddlers 5-0. Joe Byrne & John Lewis were both unbeaten although John had to come back from 2-0 down against Paul Ducksbury for his maximum.
Yoda put pressure on leaders Wanderers in the Premier Division, with an impressive 5-0 whitewash of Future Sailors. Dave Thulborn & Alistair Hawthorn both came away without losing an end. This cut the deficit by 3 points as an Abbie Milwain brace plus the doubles, after being 2-0 down, saw Mok-Ka beat Wanderers 3-2. Brian Beer & Gary Carr took 1 each for the top team. De Ferrers Young Stars Make It To Regional Finals
After providing over half of the County Schools Team Table Tennis Championships winning side’s, Burton schools sent 4 of those onto the Zonal final’s held at Bradford, competing against Derbyshire & South, West & North Yorkshire. De Ferrers Technical College had 3 of those with entries in the girls & boys under 13’s and the boys under 19’s. William Shrewsbury Primary School was also in action in the boys under 11’s.
The De Ferrers under 13 boys had a tough draw in the group having to play favourites Crossley Heath from Halifax. Despite some close games they went down 6-2. Undeterred, they bounced back against Kingstone School, Barnsley, with Joe Byrne, Andrew Heathcote & Liam Burt all unbeaten and Liam Calendar-Welch adding the final game for a 7-1 win. Confidence now began to show and their next opponents, Highfields School, Matlock, were brushed aside 6-2, again with Joe, Andrew & Liam B taking the points. This meant a semi final game against the winner from the other group, St.Mary’s College, Hull. Joe got things off to a good start winning the first game but losses for Andrew & Liam C-W but De Ferrers on the back foot. But that was the last game St. Mary’s got close in, as Liam B made it 2-2 then Joe, Andrew & Liam B reeled off the next 3 games to go into the final. With both finalists’ qualifying for the Regional finals it was just pride at stake now in a rematch with Crossley Heath and a scoreline of 3-5 was so nearly 4-4 as Joe was just edged out 12-10 in the 5th by Crossley’s number one. Still an improvement on the first game and now thoughts turn to the Regional finals at Blackburn at the end of February, the first time the under 13 boys have made it this far. Not to be outdone, the under 13 girls also made it through to Blackburn in dramatic fashion. Their deciding game came against Bradford Grammar where an early 3-1 lead, after wins by Bekki Lycett, Milly Bowering & Holly Webster, was reduced to a 4-3 deficit with Holly’s final game to play. Although never more than 2 points in each game, Holly scored the points that mattered to win all 3 games 11-9 and bring the tie level. A nervous wait then ensued as countback was used to determine their fate. With Bekki & Milly both winning 3-0 and losing 3-1 this put the girls 2 games ahead. Holly’s 3-0 & 3-2 wins meant that Sophie Richardson needed just a single game in her results to edge the team home and as she had taken a game in both her matches the girls edged home by 2 games and joined the boys in the Regional finals.
William Shrewsbury were looking to emulate last year’s efforts of qualifying for the next stage but were immediately up against it after a 5-3 loss to South Yorkshire qualifiers Dore Primary School. This left them having to beat Lees Primary, Keighley for a semi final spot. Will Pearson lead the team from the front, taking his 2 games but everyone mucked in as Lewis Acton, Dan Styne & Nick Purslow all won 1 each for a 5-3 victory. This put them up against the very strong Dronfield Primary from Derbyshire and despite a good win for Will against Dronfield’s top player this was where their journey ended as they went down 5-1. James Ward led the De Ferrers under 19 boys well remaining unbeaten in his 3 games. But despite an early 5-3 win against Bradford Grammar, there were no other successes as a 3rd place finish saw the team miss out on qualification by one place.

Pears Bubble Pearced By Dynamo
The top two met this week in division 1 of the Chartwell Burton Uxbridge Winter Table Tennis League and it was reigning champions Dynamo that came off best. Andy Pearce continued his good season for the leaders, taking both his games in straight sets & the doubles with Howard Webster before Will Pearson but the final point on the board for Pears to stop a whitewash. Rams took advantage of Pears slip up to move into 2nd place with a 4-1 win against Team Shinobi. Joe Byrne scored a maximum and Tony Byrne 1, with Sam Mastropietro taking Shinobi’s point. Mean Machines’ Chris McGloughlin made full use of the facilities with two 5 end marathon’s in his sides’ match with fellow title contenders, Alfabet. He edged out Liam Burt 12-10 and then Andrew Heathcote 15-13. In fact, 14 of the 20 ends played were won by just 2 points and despite an excellent win for Andrew against Dan Morson that was Alfabet’s sole success as Mean Machines won 4-1. Chris & Bekki Lycett took one each for D&D, but neither could get past Tigers’ Simon Price. Tigers then had 3 match points in the 5th end of the doubles before going down 12-10 and handing a 3-2 win to D&D. Saints joined the scramble for 6th place with a 3-2 win over Metalheads thanks to 2 from Harry Loftus. Gill Shand also had a good win against Gary Acton but found Gary Carr a hurdle too far before the Gary’s joined forces to win the doubles. Jordan Jaworski came close to his first success of the season against Tripods’ Danny Hyde. Unfortunately he lost the 5th end 11-7 and this was as close as Balls of Fury as they went down to their 11th 5-0 defeat. Michael Seymour joined Danny for Tripods maximums.
A curtailed Premier Division programme saw Wanderers open a 4 point gap at the top with a 5-0 win against Future Sailors. Brian Beer & Matt Satchwell were in imperious form as they dropped only one end each to Sailors’ Steve McGloughlin. Steve far a little better against Red Devils, beating Wajid Hussain but this was his sides’ only positive point as they were brushed aside in the other games, James Ward continuing his unbeaten season and taking the devils into 2nd place. Still Too Close to Call
The Premier Division of the Chartwell Burton Uxbridge winter Table Tennis League continues to be nip & tuck with still only 6 points covering the top 5 teams. Red Devils bucked recent trends by completing back to back wins, with a 4-1 success over Mok-Ka. James Ward came through a messy encounter with Abbie Milwain for his 2 and a good victory for Wajid Hussain against Micah Hudson, plus the doubles, moved the devil’s up to 2nd. Leaders Wanderers could find no way past Blades Simon Gore as he won both, but 1 each from Gary Carr & Matt Satchwell was enough to draw them level before a deuce 5th end win in the doubles saw them home 3-2. Dave Walker & John Hodson performed similarly in Platinum’s match up with Future Sailors. They both got the better of Lara Croft but were no match for Steve McQueen (it’s what the scorecard said!!) as the singles were shared, but comfortably took the doubles to win 3-2.
Rams’ Joe Byrne was in blistering form in Division 1 as he removed the last remaining 100% record in the division in beating Dan Morson. He also dismissed Mean Machines’ Chris McGloughlin, before joining his dad for doubles success and a 3-2 win. Dynamo’s 5-0 win over Metalheads has put them 3 points clear at the top, the biggest gap so far this season!! Howard Webster & Brian Judd proved too wiley for recent Burton & District Primary champion Lewis Acton & dad Gary. Pears’ Will Pearson expressed his wish to play all his table tennis on Wednesday night’s, as he recorded two fantastic wins against Andrew Heathcote & Liam Burt. However Alfabet took the other games for a 3-2 win. Euan Kerry & Jordan Jaworski both took a game from Saints Emma Shand but couldn’t make any further inroads as Balls of Fury succumbed to another 5-0 whitewash. Harry Loftus wasn’t stretched for his maximum. Tigers’ Simon Price took his 2 singles against Tripods as again his match went down to the doubles. This time Tigers edged the 5th end for their 4th win. Mike Seymour & tony Willday both took 1 for Tripods. D&D were in action twice, taking 2 victories. Against Waddlers, Bekki Lycett took her 2 but the other games were far from straightforward, as brother Chris just squeezed past a luckless Sigourney Ducksbury in the 5th before being beaten in 4 by Paul Ducksbury. The doubles continued Sigourney’s bad fortunes as her side went down 12-10 in the last end for a 4-1 defeat. Sam Mastropietro had 2 excellent wins over Bekki & Chris for Team Shinobi, but with D&D clearing up the other games they won their 2nd game 3-2. Dynamo Remain Only Undefeated Side
With the Christmas break behind them, 4 of the top 5 sides met each other in Division 1 of the Chartwell Burton Uxbridge Winter Table Tennis League this week. Reigning champions Dynamo & 3rd place Alfabet put their respective 100% records on the line and it was the champions Andy Pearce who came through unscathed beating both Liam Burt & Andrew Heathcote 3-1. Howard Webster couldn’t match his partners singles exploits but his experience was invaluable in the doubles to give Dynamo a 3-2 victory. Pears also put their 100% record to the test, making it harder for themselves’ thanks to a footballing broken wrist for Mark Pearson. Son Will did all he could winning both his games, including a fantastic victory over Joe Byrne. However Rams took all the other games and a 3-2 success with Tony Byrne joining Joe for a single win plus the doubles. The two bottom teams also met with Metalheads dominating. Lewis Acton celebrated winning the under 11 Burton Schools title the day before by taking his first maximum, a feat that was matched by dad Gary in a 5-0 victory. Two 5 enders decided Saints game with Tigers as the former came back twice from 2-1 down. Firstly Gill Shand came back to edge past Ellie Rutland-Jones 13-11 and then joined Harry Loftus to nick the doubles 12-10 and the match 3-2. Simon Price took 2 for Tigers. Tripods, wheeled out 2 games and 2 tight victories. Waddlers’ Sigourney Ducksbury continued to show her improvement but just couldn’t quite finish things off as she lost in 5 to both Tony Willday & Michael Seymour with Michael’s victory over Paul Ducksbury giving Tripods their first 3-2 win. Sam Mastropietro took both his games for Team Shinobi but ended up on the losing side as Tripods took the doubles & the match 3-2.
The poison chalice of leaders in the Premier Division was this week taken on by Wanderers and they fared no better than previous holders. Red Devils came back to form as James Ward took his normal 2 and was supported by Wajid Hussain who beat Liz Merrick and then joined James for a doubles win. Gary Carr took Wanderers solitary point. Excellent 5 set victories for Platinum’s Dave Walker & John Hodson over Dave Thulborn were still not enough to beat Yoda as Eddie Freeman took 2 plus the doubles to see Yoda home 3-2. Mok-ka were in action twice with mixed results. Abbie Milwain came through a tight 5 ends against Blades’ Simon Gore to complete her 2 wins but this was the sum of her team’s success as Ian Perry & Simon took 1 each plus the doubles. Against Future Sailors things went more Mok-ka’s way, as Micah Hudson took one plus the doubles with maximum girl Abbie for a 4-1 win. Steve McGloughlin took the seamen’s point. January 7th 2010 Gary Carr with Brian Beer

Wanderers' Maximums Upset the Status Quo
Two maximum wins have lifted Wanderers to the top the Premier Division of the Chartwell Burton Uxbridge Winter Table Tennis League. Catching up games cancelled before christmas, they met Future Sailors twice, with Brian Beer unbeaten in both. Andy Walker and Gary Carr provided the other points, one in each match, as Wanderers moved 3 points clear of their rivals with a game in hand. Simon Gore beat both Eddie Freeman & Dave Thulborn, as Blades upset previous leaders Yoda. He then partnered Ian Perry to a doubles win to secure a 3-2 victory. Red Devils & Platinum also faced each twice with each taking a 3-2 win. James Ward took 2 and the doubles with Wajid Hussain for Red Devils to take the first game, with John Hodson & Simon Price taking 1 each for Platinum. A late call off cost the devils dear in the second game as James 2 wasn’t enough, as John, this time with Dave Walker, took the other games to tip the scales in Platinum’s favour.
James Ward remains the only unbeaten Premier Division player with Abbie Milwain only 1 loss behind. Brian Beer, Simon Gore & Eddie Freeman complete the top 5. In Division 1, Dan Morson will hope to continue his 100% success rate after the christmas break. Will Pearson, Simon Price & Chris McGloughlin and right on his heels, all having lost only one, with Joe Byrne completing the top 5. Yoda The Masters For Xmas
Yoda moved 3 points clear at the top of the Premier Division of the Chartwell Burton Uxbridge Winter Table Tennis League this week, with a 3-2 success over Red Devils. Again an all-round performance saw Dave Thulborn & Eddie Freeman take one apiece plus the doubles to overcome James Ward’s 2 for his side. Mok-ka took over in 2nd place with a similar result against Platinum. Abbie Milwain won both her games and came through with Micah Hudson in the doubles to edge home. Earlier John Hodson & Dave Walker had both beaten off a good challenge from Micah for victories. A Simon Gore brace and one from Ian Perry gave Blades a 4-1 win against Future Sailors, for whom Glen Carr scored their only point.
Undefeated Alfabet rose to the summit of Division 1 with a good 5-0 win over Metalheads, with Andrew Heathcote & Liam Burt unbeaten. Pears & Dynamo also retained their unbeaten records, but both were severely tested. D & D almost toppled Pears as Chris & Bekki Lycett both beat Mark Pearson, Chris coming from match points down at 2-1 to win in 5. The game hinged on Bekki’s game with Will Pearson as the Pear came back from 2-0 down to win the game and therefore the match 3-2. Dynamo found Rams’ Joe Byrne in terrific form as both Andy Pearce & Brian Judd fell to the 13 year old. However Andy & Brian held it together to take the other points and remain in 4th place. Tigers’ Ellie Rutland-Jones starred in her teams 3rd successive victory as they beat Balls of Fury 5-0. Her 2 wins, were her first in league table tennis and all is looking good for a bright future. Harry Loftus continued his good recent results with a match winning 2 for Saints, as they beat Waddlers 4-1. Emma Shand also got on the scoreboard with Paul Ducksbury taking Waddlers solitary game. Alfabet & Dynamo Maintain 100% Record
After 8 weeks of the Chartwell Burton Uxbridge Winter Table Tennis League, just 3 teams remain unbeaten, all in Division 1. Alfabet & Rams locked horns, where one maximum record had to go and with 23 of the 25 possible games played it was a tense, tight affair. Joe Byrne put the Rams 1-0 up, coming from 2-1 down to pip Liam Burt in the 5th. Andrew Heathcote then levelled things for Alfabet before Liam clung onto a 5 set win over John Lewis to put his side 2-1 up. Andrew then went 2-0 up against Joe before being pegged back to 2-2. The match hinged on this game and it was Andrew who just came through 11-8 to put Alfabet in charge. They went onto win the doubles to take a 4-1 success. Dynamo were the other team to put their 100% record on the line against D&D. Despite an excellent Bekki Lycett win over Howard Webster, D&D succumbed in the other games, where Andy Pearce took a maximum to see Dynamo home 4-1. At the other end of the table, 2 from Harry Loftus and 1 from Gill Shand saw Saints take their first win of the season as they beat Team Shinobi 3-2. Waddlers moved into mid-table with a comftable 5-0 defeat of Balls of Fury as Paul & Sigourney Ducksbury won all.
In the Premier Division, Wanderers moved up to 2nd place with a big 5-0 win over Platinum. Liz Merrick was pushed all the way by John Hodson before completing her brace and Brian Beer took 5 to see off Dave Walker, in taking his 2. The top 2 players in the averages both ended up on losing sides despite winning their games. 2 from Abbie Milwain couldn’t stop Yoda from maintaining their slender lead at the top as Eddie Freeman & Dave Thulborn held things together to beat Mok-Ka 3-2. It was a similar story for James Ward as his 2 for Red Devils was countered by 1 each plus the doubles from Blades’ Ian Perry & Simon Gore as the steelmen ran out 3-2 winners. With two local county events taking away the more usual entries it was some new faces that took away trophies from the Burton Uxbridge Junior 1* tournament recently. The morning play saw Glenn Daly from Somerset come through 8 competitors in the Under 11 Boys event to win without losing a set, beating local favourite Will Pearson in the final. The Cadet Boys had the most competitive entry but it was the top 4 seeds that made it through to semi-finals. 3rd seed, Jake Meikle from Holymoorside TTC overcame Sheffield’s David Thompson to take a place in the final but could find no answer to overcome an excellent display by 12 year old Daniel Wearden from St.Helens. The 12 year old confirmed his number 1 seeding to take the final, winning the tournament without losing a set! The girls also saw two new morning winners with Colin Deaton TTC’s, Emily Kelly brushing all aside in the Under 13 event whilst Burton’s Jade Stevenson, in her very competition, came through to win the Under 11 competition.
Emily proved a popular name as Miss Kelly continued her form into the afternoon, where she also took the Cadet girl’s title and then Spartan’s Emily Roys secured the Junior girl’s trophy. The Under 13 boys saw 2nd seed Tim Denby, from Colin Deaton TTC, just go down in the 5th to Staffordshire’s Jake Westwood, in his group. This put him up against group winner Bradley Wood from Yorkshire in the semi final. But a 3-0 win saw him renew rivalry with Jake in the final and despite being 2-1 down, his fighting spirit saw Tim come back to take the last 2 games and the Under 13 crown. In the Junior Boys, Jake Meikle took his 2nd semi-final place of the day but this time was toppled by Wood Green’s Stephen Ward. The other half of the draw saw David Thompson confirming his number 1 seeding, after recovering from 2-1 down to beat Buckinghamshire’s Jack Thomas. The final was an extremely tight affair but David won the decisive points in all 3 games to win. Final congratulations went to Cambridgeshire’s Adam Jepson for 2 consolation final wins and Burton’s Joe Byrne for the Junior equivalent. East Staffs Schools Dominate County Table Tennis Again
The East Staffs Schools Coaching Programme has been given a massive boost with Burton schools walking away with 5 out of the 6 titles at this years schools team county table tennis championships. Tower View Primary added to their local schools title, taking the Under 11 girls crown beating local rivals Winshill Village in the final, this from two schools that had never played table tennis a year ago! Jade Stevenson & Georgia Vincent were both unbeaten for Tower View as they won 6-2. William Shrewsbury Primary retained their Under 11 boys title, but with 3 new players in the team compared to last year the win was all the more impressive. Will Pearson led the team with 2 victories but was matched by Dan Styne, in his first county event, as they too won their final 6-2. De Ferrers Technical College dominated the rest of the programme with 3 team successes. The Under 13 competition saw them take both the girls and boys titles. The boys Joe Byrne, Andrew Heathcote, Liam Burt & Liam Welsh, were undefeated in their 3 games and the girls Bekki Lycett, Grace Winfieldall, Fiona Valentine, Millie Bowering & Sophie Richardson were winners in what was there very first competition. The title trio was completed when the Under 19’s saw off all their opponents without losing a single game.
In only it’s second year, the programme has seen a huge rise in participation numbers within schools, helped by the provision of coaches for nearly half of the local Primary & Secondary schools in the East Staffs School Sports Partnership. As impressive though, has been the rise in the ability level alongside participation, born out by all the winners. Claire Dawes who co-ordinates the coaching programme through the School Sports Partnership said "It’s fantastic to have so much success so quickly at this level. We are now involved in 11 schools compared to 2 when we began and are still looking to extend provision further" She continued "The School Sport Coaching programme has enabled lots of young people to get involved in extracurricular and community sport and it is great to see so many young people taking part in competition" All the winners will now go onto the Regional finals in January and hopefully beyond to the finals in April.

Victories to All
A John Hodson maximum and one from Dave Walker saw Platinum record their first win of the season in the Premier Division of the Chartwell Burton Uxbridge Winter Table Tennis League, meaning all teams now have at least one victory on the board. They added a doubles win to secure a 4-1 success over Blades for whom Simon Price had a good win over Dave. Abbie Milwain took another 2 for Mok-ka in their match against Wanderers but it was teammate Micah Hudson’s 5 set win over Barrie Whittle that snuck Mok-ka over the line 3-2 as Brian Beer took one for Wanderers plus the doubles with Barrie. Yoda put a makeshift Future Sailors to the sword with a comftable 5-0 victory, Dave Thulborn & Eddie Freeman doing all the damage.
Dynamo’s enforced week off saw three sides leapfrog over them in Division 1 all taking 5-0 wins. Pears went top as Mark & Will Pearson saw off a determined challenge from Tripods. Mean Machines followed them into 2nd place with Dan Morson & Chris McGloughlin dropping only 1 set to Saints. Rams took over 3rd place, but John Lewis was made to work very hard as both Lewis & Gary Acton for Metalheads took him to 5. Joe Byrne completed a more sedate maximum. Alfabet were involved in their usual tussle, this time coming out on top against D & D 4-1. Andrew Heathcote was pushed all the way by Bekki Lycett before completing his 2 wins but Bekki got the better of the 5th set, 12-10 to defeat Liam Burt for D & D only point. Team Shinobi produced their most dominant display of the season beating Balls of Fury 5-0 as Sam Mastropietro & Ryan Rutland Jones remained unbeaten. Finally there was a 2nd win for Tigers as a brace from Simon Price plus the doubles saw them beat Waddlers 3-2. For more information on all Table Tennis news go to www.uxbridgettc.co.uk

The Roar Goes Quackers!!
The second tier of the Chartwell Burton Uxbridge Winter Table Tennis League saw two teams record their first victories of the season in week 6. Families were to the for in both games as father & daughter team of Paul & Sigourney Ducksbury beat father & son, Gary & Lewis Acton 4-1. Waddlers’ Paul proved the strongest as he came through without losing an end with Sigourney only being deprived of her maximum by a 5th end win for Metalheads’ Gary. Tigers were the next maiden winners, where brother & sister Ryan & Ellie Rutland Jones were this time pitched against each other, as they took on Team Shinobi. Ryan took the family honours, with team mate Sam Mastropietro also taking 1. However 2 from Simon Price sent the game into a deciding doubles where Tigers roared to 2 set lead. Team Shinobi refused to be beaten though taking the next 2 and at 8-4 up in the 5th looked favourites but a run of 7 out of the final 8 points edged Tigers over the line. Dynamo moved ominously to the top of the division proving to strong for Tripods. Howard Webster & Andy Pearce dropped only 2 ends in a 5-0 success. Pears were in good form again as they beat Saints 4-1. Will Pearson eclipsed dad Mark, winning all his games, with Harry Loftus chalking up Saints only point. Mean Machines remained only a point off the top with a whitewash of Balls of Fury, Chris McGloughlin & Dan Morson remaining unbeaten and Rams joined them on 21 points with a 4-1 defeat of D & D. Joe Byrne took two for Rams who were denied all the points by an excellent Chris Lycett win over John Lewis.
Wanderers moved to within a point of top place in the Premier Division with a 4-1 win against Yoda but are still only 4th!! Two from Brian Beer, including a good win against Dave Thulborn and one from Gary Carr gave Wanderers the individual honours and a 5th end 11-9 result in the doubles saw them take the final point. Future Sailors’ Chris McGloughlin, playing up from Division 1, had a great 3-0 win against Red Devils’ Wajid Hussain. However this was his teams’ only success as James Ward continued his 100% record to see his side home 4-1. Blades’ Simon Gore & Ian Perry, after one singles win apiece, took the all important doubles, and a 3-2 win over Mok-ka. Neither could get past Abbie Milwain as she took both Mok-ka’s points. Tight At Top As 4 Points Covers 5
Both divisions of the Chartwell Burton Uxbridge Winter Table Tennis League are proving very tight affairs this year with 4 & 3 points covering the top 5 respectively in the premier and 1st divisions. The prem saw all matches finish 3-2 with a third of the games going to 5 ends. Mok-ka moved up to 2nd place defeating Red Devils. 1 each from Abbie Milwain & Micah Hudson plus the doubles were enough to cancel out a James Ward brace. Blades had the only undefeated player in their match against Wanderers, with Alistair Hawthorn taking 2, but with Gary Carr & Brian Beer coming back from 2 down to edge past Ian Perry and then securing the doubles in 5, Wanderers came out on top. Although lying 5th they have a game in hand which could potentially see them in first place!! Future Sailors moved off the bottom with their first win. Glen Carr was their star taking his 2 singles, one battling back from 2-1 down to beat Platinum’s John Hodson. John & Pat Byrne took one each to send the game into a deciding doubles where things look good for the "metalmen" as they took a 2-1 lead. However Glen & Michael Seymour never gave up and took the last 2 11-9 & 12-10 to squeeze a victory.
Division 1 is even tighter at the summit, with only 3 points covering the top 5. However, 3 of the games were a little more conclusive as the leading 3 teams all recorded 5-0 wins. Pears were most impressive, beating Balls of Fury without losing an end, with Will & Mark Pearson unbeaten. Dynamo were close on their heels, as Andy Pearce & Howard Webster (making a welcome return to playing), lost only a single doubles end in their victory against Waddlers. Rams completed the trio of whitewashes, as they beat Saints, losing a "huge" 2 ends. John Lewis & Joe Byrne were the dominant pair here, with Harry Loftus pushing Joe all the way for Saints. The final game saw one of only 2 personal 100% records fall as Tripod’s Tony Willday scored a great win over D & D’s Bekki Lycett. But with Chris Lycett beating Tony and Bekki surviving a 5 setter with Michael Seymour it was the doubles which decided the outcome with D & D taking that and the match 3-2. November 19th 2009 Winter League Division 1 players player of year Howard Webster & Chairman Chris Newton

Youngsters Show Appreciation for the Old Guard
Burton Uxbridge Table Tennis rewarded their high flyers at it’s annual awards party. With the new winter league being added to their summer league it was a chance to celebrate their first full year at their new home at Robert Sutton Sports College following an investment of almost £500,000 to refurbish and add to the college’s old sportshall. Each player was given the chance to vote for a player’s player of the year in their own division, with all 4 winners admitting to be very surprised. The winter league came up with 2 more experienced players in Glen Carr (Premier) & Howard Webster (Div. One). Howard graciously said afterwards "with so many of junior players in the league it’s nice they know who you are!! I try to help them whenever I’m playing them and with this award it looks like they appreciate it". The summer league saw two younger players taking the honours with Jamie Davies (a new league player) taking the division 1 prize and Andrew Heathcote taking the division 2 trophy. Andrew wasn’t done with his prizes as he walked off with the prestigious Junior Player of the Year whilst sister Jenny also received a special award for her hours of volunteer work done this year helping out at competitions and computer design work.
The most improved player of the year went to Bekki Lycett, a young star tipped for a bright future by Regional coach and ex England number 1 and multi commonwealth champion, Helen Lower. Helen said "Bekki has put a tremendous amount of work into a short amount of time and has improved out of all recognition. If her improvement and work ethic continue at this rate more awards and success will follow". The player of the year was, as is usual, a very competitive affair. The award went to Abbie Milwain who took her first Junior 4* title during the season as well as being county schools champion, a semi finalist at the national schools finals, representative honours in both the schools home international and UK school games and a starring role in the division 1 Burton Uxbridge girls Junior British League team.
Finally the Gadsby Trophy, which is voted and awarded by the club committee for a person who has put a huge amount of effort into the club over the past twelve months. The citation on the evening stated, "this is one of the most dedicated and hard working individuals the club has ever had the pleasure to be associated with". This deserving award was presented to Simon Price. For more table tennis information please go to our website www.uxbridgettc.co.uk

The Force Is Strong As Yoda Remain Unbeaten
Yoda rose to the top of the pile in the premier division of the Chartwell Burton Uxbridge Winter Table Tennis League. Dave Thulborn & Eddie Freeman made it 4 wins out of 4, this time recording a 5-0 success over Platinum’s John Hodson & Dave Walker. Abbie Milwain kept up her own 100% record as Mok-Ka beat Future Sailors 4-1. Micah Hudson also chipped in with a win but couldn’t stop Glen Carr taking the sailors point. Brian Beer & Liz Merrick took one each for Wanderers with victories over Wajid Hussain but two from James Ward plus the doubles saw Red Devils take the match 3-2.
The strength & depth of table tennis in Burton has been shown to be in great hands, with the 40% increase in the number of teams joining division 1. 3 of these new players locked horns as Team Shinobi took on Waddlers. First wins were put on the board by Sigourney & Paul Ducksbury, but 2 from Sam Mastropietro plus the doubles with Ryan Rutland-Jones saw Team Shinobi sneak the win 3-2. Two more 100% records were put on the line as Mean Machines’ Dan Morson took on Tigers’ Simon Price. There proved to be nothing between the pair as they shared the first 4 ends and traded points to 9-9 in the 5th. But it was the younger Dan who bravely went for the last points to secure victory and with one from Chris McGloughlin plus the doubles the machines drove to the top of the division with a 4-1 win. Bekki Lycett underlined her massive improvement maintaining her and her team’s unbeaten start taking 2 in a 4-1 victory over Metalheads. Chris Lycett took 1 and with Bekki took D & D’s first doubles win as Gary Carr’s left hand took care of Metalheads sole notch on the post. Dynamo moved up the table with two big wins. Andy Pearce & Brian Judd didn’t drop an end against Balls of Fury in a 5-0 win before Saints Harry Loftus toppled Brian to stop Dynamo repeating the feat. 1 each for Joe Byrne & John Lewis, plus the doubles, gave Rams a third successive victory. However neither could get past Dave Pickering who took both Ashby Rigby Clubs’ points. Tripods’ Michael Seymour came through a titanic 5 setter against Alfabet’s Liam Burt but couldn’t repeat the feat against Andrew Heathcote as he lost a 2-1 lead. Alfabet mopped up the other games for a 4-1 win. For more information on all Table Tennis news go to www.uxbridgettc.co.uk

Summer Efforts Produce Winter Heat
It’s always been said that you only get out of life what you put into it and this showed up in abundance during week 3 of the Chartwell Burton Uxbridge Winter Table Tennis League Division 1 program. After winning only 27% of her games in the summer league D & D’s Bekki Lycett produced an excellent display to beat Ashby Rugby Club’s Dave Pickering, who finished top of the summer league averages. Her 2, plus 1 from brother Chris, was enough to see them to a 3-2 win. The weekly coaching sessions with multi ex National champion Helen Lower are beginning to prove a breeding ground for future success, as another young rising star, Sam Mastropietro showed his improved temperament as his maximum took his side, Team Shinobi, to a 4-1 victory. Ryan Rutland-Jones secured his first success as he beat cousin Lewis Acton but couldn’t find a way past uncle Gary Acton, who took Metalheads solitary point. Pears 100% start to the season was halted as neither Will nor Mark Pearson could make much impression on Tiger’s Simon Price. The doubles looked to be going Tigers way at 1-1 & 10-6 up in 3rd but a defensive change of tactic from Will proved the turning point as Pears came back to take the end 13-11 and run away with the 4th to edge over the line 3-2 and remain at the top. Saint’s Harry Loftus put a spanner in Alfabet’s works as he returned to form with excellent wins over Liam Burt & Andrew Heathcote. However the younger pair held there nerve to take the doubles for another 3-2 scoreline. Joe Byrne proved 2 legs were better than 3 as he remained undefeated against Tripods. Michael Seymour rallied for Tripods to take a well earned win against John Lewis but this proved their only success as Rams won 4-1. Mean Machines put pressure on the top place with a 5-0 whitewash against Waddlers, with Dan Morson & Chris McGloughlin undefeated.
The only match played in the Premier Division saw the top two teams matched up. All Square All Round
After 2 weeks of the Chartwell Burton Uxbridge Winter Table Tennis League the top 4 sides in the Premier Division, can be split by only games difference, all having 6 points. Yoda remain the only unbeaten side who have played 2 with Eddie Freeman & Dave Thulborn again taking 1 apiece and the doubles for a 3-2 success over Red Devils. The Devils James Ward took both his teams points. Blades moved to the top with a straight sets whitewash over Future Sailors, as Ian Perry & Simon Gore remained unbeaten. Platinum’s John Hodson put his side 1 up with a good victory over Micah Hudson before Mok-ka took control to take all the remaining games. Abbie Milwain carried on her recent top form at National Junior level with 2 wins but although 4-1 looks comprehensive the others games were far from it as Micah came back from 2-1 down to beat Pat Byrne and the doubles was edged 11-9 in the 5th.
Pears look the early form team in Division 1 as they recorded their 2nd 5-0 win, this time despatching Waddlers. Mark & Will Pearson took the honours, with Paul Ducksbury doing best for his side taking an end from Mark in what was their debut match. Alfabet produced a dominant display against Balls of Fury as Liam Burt & Andrew Heathcote took their team into 2nd spot without losing an end. Dynamo began the defence of their title with a 3-2 victory over Tigers. Andy Pearce & Brian Judd took 1 each plus the doubles but neither could find a way past Simon Price who took 2. One of the league favourites, Mean Machines suffered a shock defeat to Team Shinobi as Sam Mastropietro & Ryan Rutland-Jones took their team to a 3-2 win. However, individual honours went to Dan Morson who won both his games. Finally, 9 year old Lewis Acton secured his first league win with a straight set success over Ashby Rugby Clubs Jack Pickering. His Metalheads team could find no way past Dave Pickering who took 2, leaving the doubles to decide the fate of the match. Gary Carr & Brian Beer allowed Platinum only 2 legs in their 5-0 victory. With some new team formations the league looks like proving to mirror the summer 2nd division for competitiveness and the 4 new sides took on each other. James Ward took 2 for the Red Devils but the match hinged on a 5 set epic between his teammate Wajid Hussain and Blades Chris McGloughlin. At 2-0 up Chris, playing as a reserve, looked like causing an upset and sending the match into a deciding doubles but Wajid refused to lie down and battled back to take the 5th 12-10 and with the doubles, a 4-1 success for his team. Simon Gore took the point for the Blades. Mok-ka’s Abbie Milwain took the Individual honours in her against Yoda but 1 each from Dave Thulborn & Eddie freeman plus the doubles saw them home 3-2.
Division 1 saw 3 teams set off with maximum points as Mean Machines, Rams & Pears all recorded 5-0 wins. Metalheads found no way past Mean Machines’ Chris McGloughlin & Dan Morson, while Balls of Fury could register only a single leg more against Rams’ Joe Byrne & John Lewis. Team Shinobi’s Sam Mastropietro provided more a threat against Pears but he stalled after the first leg against both Will & Mark Pearson to leave his team pointless. Debutants Tripods began well with a 4-1 victory over Ashby Rugby Club. Michael Seymour completed a straight sets maximum and Tony Willday took 1 for the Tripods leaving Harry Pickering to pick up the rugby boys point. Bekki Lycett continued her improvement taking both her singles games including a titanic 12-10 win in the 5th over Harry Loftus, in Dumb & Dumbers’ 3-2 win over Saints.
